Administrative History

Hagerstown Community College, formerly Hagerstown Junior College, was founded in 1946 as Maryland first community college. The college offers more than 100 programs for career preparation, university transfer, and non-credit continuing education. Major departments on campus include the Nursing, Health Sciences, and STEM. The first classes were held in the evenings at Hagerstown High School, until the college built its own campus in 1966. In 1998 the college officially changed its name from Hagerstown Junior College to Hagerstown Community College. Since its creation, HCC has had four presidents: Dr. Atlee Kepler from 1953-1986; Dr. Norman Shea from 1986-2001; Dr. Guy Altieri from 2002-2017; and Dr. Jim Klauber from 2018 to the present.
