Administrative History
It is believed that these items came from Dr. Atlee Kepler as either gifts or souvenirs from his travels to Japan. This collection includes items that we do now know much about, however have been able to piece together some information after some basic research. The origami figures are Hinamatsuri dolls for the festival Hinamatsuri or Doll’s Day. During the festival parents celebrate their daughters and their future growth and happiness. The two dolls represent members of the Japanese Imperial Family and are often shown with other dolls of attendants and court members. The male figure, or Odairisama, holds a ritual baton and the female figure, Ohinasma, holds a fan. The “Matsu-ura Screens” are examples of the Japanese traditional genre-painting of folded screens which often showed scenes of nature or people.
