Scope and Contents

: The William M. Brish Library collection contains material regarding the changes in library environment and policies over time. Included in the collection are memos, library inventory, library policies, photographs, newspaper articles, and dissertations. Names, identification numbers, and resumes are included from library staff and student workers and a collection of dissertations. Library acquisitions were recorded from as early as 1962 to 1991 showing the collection and new books added each year. Included are time sheets from previous student workers. Photographs, newspaper articles, and dissertations are also part of this collection that provide information about the opening of the college and the move to the Robinwood location The William M Brish Library Collection will have three main series: Library Administration, Collections, and Donations & Gifts. The First Series, Library Administration, will include five subseries, Staff, Student Employees, Library Policies & Operation, Correspondence, and Committees. These will be arranged by date. This series will include information on early library staff, student employees, and changing policies. The second series, Collections, will include five subseries, Acquisitions & Accessions, Inventory, Reports which will all be arranged by date, Circulation which will be arranged alphabetically then by date, and Dissertations which will be arranged alphabetically. This series includes library inventory and circulation as early as 1962, dissertations, and meeting and council minutes. The third series, Donations & Gifts, include items presented to the library such as microfilm holding the inventory of items in the cornerstone of the courthouse. This series will be arranged by date.

Conditions Governing Access

Access to files containing information on University personnel matters is restricted for fifty years from the latest date of the materials in those files. Access to student records is restricted for seventy-five years from the latest date of the records in those files. Restrictions are noted at the file level.

Administrative History

: In the fall of 2000 the William M Brish Library opened in the Learning Resource Center. Before the library on campus opened, Hagerstown Community College was located at South High. The high school library was used at that point, but when the new ground was proposed for the college, William M Brish reminded council members that an accredited college needs at least 4000 volumes and the college needed its own library.

Materials will be arranged by date, and in the second series, dissertations will further be arranged alphabetically by author's last name and chronologically.

Provenance

The collection was transferred from the library to the archives department at Hagerstown Community College, however no record of this transfer was kept. Therefore the original creator(s) as well as the date and transfer approval are unknown.

Separated Materials

This collection includes materials that are housed in multiple locations, including oversize items and bound volumes. These items will be noted at the folder and item level.
