Scope and Contents

This collection comprises mainly of print materials, with one cassette audio tape and some photographs. A large portion of the collection includes meeting minutes and committee documents. Some of the committees included are: the Faculty Senate Committee, the Management Council, the Instructional Council, the Curriculum Committee, and the Advisory Council. Other materials include: faculty and staff files, correspondence. Materials range from 1946-2002. This collection will be arranged into two series: Faculty Resources, and Committee Documents. The first series will be further divided into three sub-series: Faculty Advancement, General Correspondence, and Staff Files. The second series will have two sub-series: Faculty and Administrative Committees, and Student and Curriculum Committees. Materials within series will be arranged topically and chronologically except for in the Staff Files sub-series which will be arranged alphabetically by staff last names.

Administrative History

Hagerstown Community College, formerly Hagerstown Junior College, was founded in 1946 as Maryland first community college. The college offers more than 100 programs for career preparation, university transfer, and non-credit continuing education. Major departments on campus include the Nursing, Health Sciences, and STEM. The first classes were held in the evenings at Hagerstown High School, until the college built its own campus in 1966. In 1998 the college officially changed its name from Hagerstown Junior College to Hagerstown Community College. Since its creation, HCC has had four presidents: Dr. Atlee Kepler from 1953-1986; Dr. Norman Shea from 1986-2001; Dr. Guy Altieri from 2002-2017; and Dr. Jim Klauber from 2018 to the present. The Office of Academic Affairs manages the operations of the faculty, curriculum, course departments, student enrollment and retention, and the faculty governing body. The office is led by the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services and includes: the Academic Division Directors, Associate Dean of Academic Services, the Dean of Instruction, Library Services, the Academic Testing Center, Learning Support Center, and the Fletcher Faculty Development Center.
